X

The unknown X becomes a whole symphony of shapes... In a universe where everything is by itself yet can intersect with each other, cross-action seems the best way to solve an unknown equation.

Max Hattler

Max Hattler is a German artist and filmmaker based in Hong Kong whose work spans abstract animation, video installation, and audiovisual performance. His films explore relationships between sound and image, rhythm and structure, and abstraction and perception, often using geometric forms and precise visual systems to create immersive audiovisual experiences. His 2012 film X exemplifies this approach through a densely choreographed abstract composition shaped in close dialogue with sound.   Hattler’s works have been shown internationally in film festivals, galleries, and performance contexts, and his practice moves fluidly between cinema, contemporary art, and live media. Alongside his artistic work, he is an Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, where his research and teaching engage experimental animation, visual music, and optical sound.
