PETRA BALEKIĆ, THOMAS JOHNSON VOLDA: SEEDS AND WOUNDS

Thomas Johnson Volda will be creating a new performance animation work for this year's Animafest festival, this time partnering with Croatian animation film maker Petra Balekić.

Seeds and Wounds is a 12 hour experimental performance animation, with the welcomed participation of Animafest festival guests. Petra creates hand drawn animation loops on tracing paper, playing with line and the female body as the main subject. These projected monochromatic animations will dance and commune with Thomas and his animated puppet self. The live performance animation depicts the cyclical nature of life, both impulsive and reflective the two animators creating a combined imagery askew.

Petra Balekić is an animator and director. She graduated from the Graphic Arts Department (2013) and the Animation and New Media Department (2017), both at the Academy of Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. She made five short animated films and her graduation film „The Stranger“ in My Head has toured numerous festivals around the world, and was included in the Student Competition at major festivals such as Animafest and Annecy. She is currently distributing her film "Just Between Us". She has collaborated as a director, animator and designer on other audiovisual projects, such as animation on The Fall of Rome (directed by Balazs Turai) and The Collector (directed by Danijel Žeželj), or film animation and direction on the film based on Emily Dickinson’s poem The Chariot for the famous TED-Ed channel.

Thomas Johnson Volda (Bath, England, 1984) graduated in Time Based Media from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, and at the New Media Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Thomas has co-directed two stop-animation short films together with his partner Ivana Bošnjak, Simulacra (2010) and Imbued Life (2019), with Bonobostudio. The films have been screened at many festivals and have received several acclaimed awards.
