Synopsis

An animated version of Edgar Allan Poe's short story. It tells of Prince Prospero who, determined to keep the plague that is ravaging the countryside away, barricades himself and his court in his castle. Though his subjects are dying, he gives a ball and there he meets a beautiful woman. Following her through the castle, he finally catches up with her and finds her to be the Red Death that he was so anxious to avoid.

Pavao Štalter

Branko Ranitović

Branko Ranitović (1925-2010) was a screenwriter and director of documentary and animated films. He was inspired by the modernist style of the Zagreb school of animation, even in films for children, such as Prometni znaci - ulični junaci (1958). In his body of work four films stand out, co-directed with prominent authors of the Zagreb school: Tolerance (1967) with Zlatko Grgić, 1 + 1 = 3 (1967) with Zdenko Gašparović, Mask of the Red Death (1969) with Pavao Štalter and Door (1971) with Nedeljko Dragić. He directed 30 episodes of the Slovenian animated series Bojan the Bear. He directed around 150 films and received 40 awards.
