Synopsis
In a provincial town, at the end of the 17th century, witch hunts have reached their peak. A young couple meets in secret, but a passing old woman notices the girl and misinterprets her actions. The girl is accused of being a witch. She is tortured and burned at the stake. The smoke from the pyre rises and travels towards an abandoned fortress on a neighbouring hill. The same night, the smoke returns, as if alive, and punishes the accessories to the crime. Blaming their affliction on the fortress, the mob sends a young man to deliver them from the evil. Overcoming a series of dangerous obstacles, the man arrives at the fortress and is joined with the spirit of the unfortunate girl. There is a blinding light, releasing a lightning bolt that burns down the wicked town. The light rises to the heavens and shines like the sun. Peace is restored.
