ANIMAFEST weekend
06/04/2011

Europa and Tuškanac cinemas are working constantly both today and tomorrow and we warmly recommend you to visit our oasis of films, small chats and pleasant meetings. Saturday’s programme brings some fresh festival titles, such as Surviving Life (Theory and Practice) by Jan Švankmajer at 8pm, after the jury proclaims this year’s winners. In anticipation of this year’s Grand Prix winner, visit the Simpsons’ screening this afternoon, or the best European short films from the Cartoon d’Or programme, or the Czech fairy tale Fimfarum: Third Time Lucky. Various today’s and tomorrow’s slots offer reruns of the films screened during the week: don’t miss last night’s favourites – My Dog Tulip, Piercing, Metropia, Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then and the screening of the winning film on Sunday at 8pm. The entire programme and schedule for Saturday and Sunday follow:

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE, David Silverman, 2007, 87' 4pm Europa cinema
The most popular American family is brought to Zagreb by its creator, offering us a chance to meet the Simpsons directly. Naturally, this films contains all the ingredients of each and every episode – a nuclear power plant, a disaster and Homer – while David Silverman himself will be the host of the screenings.

ELEANOR'S SECRET, Dominique Monféry, 2009, 76' 6pm Europa cinema
Seven-year-old Nat can’t read, making his inheritance of Aunt Eleanor’s collection of books immensely disappointing. However, curiosity leads him to books, which he discovers to be – magical. The characters in the most popular fairy tales come to life, and in order to save them from oblivion, he needs to learn how to read. Alice and Peter Pan host this animated adventure.

MIDORI-KO, Keita Kurosaka, 2010, 55' 10pm Europa cinema
A surreal vision of a 21st-century Tokyo rapidly approaching starvation, the film tells the story of a young woman who, while working to develop a “dream food” that will end the city’s hunger crisis, encounters a mysterious creature that transform her life.

ANIMAFEST FOR KIDS, 11am Tuškanac cinema, free admission
A selection of short films for the youngest audience will present the best European films from the educational programme Elephant compiled by Ljubljana's festival Animateka. Drawings and puppets of cats, mice, owls, carrots, rabbits and bats appear in the films, representing our heores and their entertaining and friendly situations in which they highlight courage, loyalty and friendship as the most important values.

CARTOON D’OR 2010, 4pm Tuškanac cinema
The Cartoon d’Or is the pan-European award for animation short films. Founded in 1991, to this day it remains the only completely European animation prize. It rewards each year the best of the best since only prize-winning films from the 29 partner festivals can compete. In 2010, among the five finalist, the winner was Kaspar Jancis for his short film Crocodile.

FIMFÁRUM - THE THIRD TIME LUCKY, Kristina Dufková, Vlasta Pospíšilová, David Súkup, 2010, 75' 6:15pm Tuškanac cinema
A film made by puppet animation is an adaptation of three fairy tales by Jan Werich. The first story sets out to the Šumava mountains to find out whether Ogres ever lived there. The middle tale concerns a king who sends his three sons to bring back a lost hat, while the third fairy tale teaches us about two virtues, luck and intelligence, that compete and change the life of a pig herder.

PIERCING I, Liu Jian, 2009, 74' 8:15pm Tuškanac cinema
The first independently produced animated feature from China, Piercing I tells the story of Zhang Xiaojun, who put himself through college and found a job in a shoe factory. As he prepares to return to his rural village, he is arrested, and storylines converge in a teahouse near the city rampart.
