The department of animation at Gobelins, established in 1975, became a synonym for outstanding training in the field of animation, both because of the visual and the craftsmanship level and because of the introduction of advanced technologies into training. These efforts made the animation world richer in generations of brilliant animators working for the finest studios across the globe.
Gobelins attracted particular attention of the animation community with its student title Oktapodi, nominated for an Academy Award in the best short animated film category in 2009.
After watching the 14 films made by Gobelins students, the Selection Jury was impressed by the growing quality of student projects; opposite two films selected for the Student Competition – Hors de l’eau and The Ostrich Politics – the short list included more titles which, due to the limited competition format, were not included in the selection, despite their extraordinary quality. Among others, Best Friend, recently presented with Annie award.
Masterful command of the visual language, animation techniques and narrative structures are idiosyncratic qualities of the Gobelins school titles, which greatly contribute to the contemporary animation expression.
