Synopsis
In the early years of photography, bright sunlight and patience are needed to make an image. Late at night in her room the American poet Emily Dickinson writes by candlelight: ‘There's a certain slant of light, winter afternoons, that oppresses like the heft of cathedral tunes.’ As the light comes and goes in a Massachusetts studio one winter afternoon, Emily summons up an English poet from an earlier age to join her in a playful vision of love and life that ends in the unique photograph of her that survives today.
After graduating from Queensland University, Dennis worked as an archivist and teacher before making his first film in 1976. He has made many award-winning films as writer, director, producer, and animator. Retrospectives of his work have screened at festivals around the world. Selected filmography: Dance of Death (1983), The Darra Dogs (1993), His Mother’s Voice (1998), Into the Dark (2002), Chainsaw (2007), a photo of me (2016), Still Alive (2018).
