Synopsis

Restored, original, hand-coloured version of Georges Méliès’ seminal film A Trip to the Moon (1902) is a prime example of the cinema of attractions, inspired by the prophetic work of Jules Verne, as well as H.G. Wells, Jarry’s theatre, and the eponymous ballet opera by Jacques Offenbach. It is not only a spectacular pioneering work in the field of VFX, which deals with the mankind’s drive for exploration, but also an allegory about imperialism and facing the Other in the form of Selenites, with a richly resolved production design and mise-en-scène. This iconic, ground-breaking, and continually referenced film, featuring its celebrated, forgotten, and finally rediscovered director, is considered among the originating narrative and science-fiction films. In addition to employing the technique of film colouring, A Trip to the Moon steps into animation with its frequent use of a substitution splice (stop-trick photography). (Silvestar Mileta)
