Synopsis
Pitt was the scenic and costume designer for this production of Hector Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust, which premiered at the Hamburg State Opera and was in the repertoire there for the following several years. Pitt and several artists in Boston created one hour of animation for the production, using about every experimental animation technique on two Oxberry cameras at the Harvard University. It is the first known use of animation for opera and pre-dates later productions using animation by the Brothers Quay and William Kentridge. The production received the Silver Mask Award for Best Scenic Design for Opera in 1988.
