Synopsis
Based on a Kannada folktale about Vanaja, a young woman who can magically turn into a flowering tree at will. Because of her gift, she is married to a prince, whose sister Kaikeyi is envious of Vanaja’s ability. The film uses hand-animated cutout puppets to evoke the rich Indian tradition of oral storytelling.
Meera Krishnamurthy studies animation at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology. She enjoys telling women-centric stories. Her first film Tell It to the Walls screened at the CRAFT International Animation Festival in Indonesia in 2017. The Flowering Tree is her thesis film.
