Synopsis

#11, Marey <-> Moiré originated from the idea of recording a continuous motion using long exposures which are intersected to get interesting patterns and mutual interference in a complex visual motion. Inspired by the research work of Étienne-Jules Marey in photographic recording and exploration of the natural movement of people and animals, Rekveld has developed a device through which he could control the different movements of the film strip, shutter and lines, and thus once again reminded how discontinuity lies at the core of the film medium.

Joost Rekveld

Joost Rekveld (1970) creates abstract films and kinetic installations starting from the idea of visual music for the eyes. He constructs mechanical optical machines or writes a software, inspired by lesser-known ideas from far corners of technological history of film, concepts from the history of science, and physics of biology. In the recent years, his creative interest moved to the areas of robotics and algorithmic art.
