ANIMATION GOES MSU! WORKS SELECTED
04/26/2017

On the media façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art from 23rd of May a competition of site-specific three-channel animations titled Animation goes MSU! takes place. Following an international open call, the pieces were selected by MSU's senior curator Leila Topić and Animafest artistic director Daniel Šuljić.

Although most of the works are usually abstract, among 19 of them from 11 countries (USA, United Kingdom, China, Australia, Germany, Estonia, France, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia) many were inspired by everyday events like driving to work (The Drive to Work by Paul Fletcher), spring cleaning (Spring Cleaning by Lea Vučko and Damir Grbanović) and computer games (THE TIDE  by Vincent Masson). Nature was another source of inspiration – Bloom by Margaret To accompanies its awakening by visual music, while Marta Stražičić's surrealist composition (Dark Forest) draws inspiration from forest landscape.

As always, Animation goes MSU! is a proper aquarium of curiosity (Aquarium of Curiosity, VCA Animation Class), containing also interests in the golden age of advertising (Carnival Love Wall, Kelley Bell) and images made by a scanner (The Climate, Marita Stanić and Maja Blažek, M_1300), while Igor Ćorić, the only author competing with two animations, set his work in the belly of a monster (Inside the Monster). Boris Hergešić literally turns MSU into a factory of art (MSU Production Line), and Wan Chen Lin (ZOEY) and his metallic visuals immerse viewers into a vision of clinical depression (Mental Black Hole). Lavish Barcelona with Miró's and Gaudi's forms is brought to life in the work of interdisciplinary artist Maja Kalogjera (Joan and Antoni went for a beer), and Yiyi Ma in Alive Beyond Fields of Paper imagines the life of a fictional animator whose creativity extends her life.

The best work of Animafest's traditional 'outdoor prologue' Animafest goes MSU! wins the festival statue and a solo three-week screening during February and March 2018.
