With the growing digitalization of society, a process accelerated by the current pandemic, the experience of the city has changed dramatically, as its inhabitants lead a life gradually more detached from the physical realm. As both tourists and city dwellers choose to orientate themselves through the use of digital platforms, the understanding of city space is becoming more mediated and less grounded in the first-hand chance experience of the flaneur. Referring to Charney’s writings on the continental drift and using practical examples as case studies, this presentation suggests that, through the combination of observation, framing and the use of hand drawing, animation can establish a process of re-connection with our surroundings. This evokes the structuring of “our being-in-the-world” that architect Pallasmaa describes, when talking about “the mental task of buildings and cities”. Replacing the digital mapping technologies, drawing emerges as a personal tool to go beyond the superficial perception of what is familiar: Through drawing animation, we rediscover the spaces we inhabit and develop a renewed sense of place. Thereby, achieving an engaged awareness of social and individual belonging.

Pedro Serrazina is an award-winning director, senior lecturer and animation researcher. His work (from short films and site-specific installations, to music videos, workshops and academic projects) has been exhibited internationally in multiple festivals and art events (Tunisia, USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia...). Serrazina is interested in the interconnections between architecture, public space, documentary and animation, and his practice-based PhD was dedicated to the use of animated space as a tool to reflect on social space. A member of the Society for Animation Studies and of Ecstatic Truth, the animation and documentary practices symposium, Serrazina participates regularly in and organizes animation-related conferences. He is a fond collector of vinyl and is currently preparing his next documentary-based film, What Remains of Us.
