Panel 4 - SCRIPTWRITING IN ANIMATION
09/06, WED 14:00 – 14:30, Kino Tuškanac

Problematizing scriptwriting is a different question to animator, and to professional scriptwriter who is challenged to write for animation. This paper should include both perspectives. Elaborating from the perspective of a scriptwriter, but also from the different experiences of animators who deal with the storytelling of animated films by themselves. What are the issues and what forms of collaboration do exist? This paper should focus on two problems: one connected to specificities of animation media, and other to process of making an animated film, which sometimes may affect the change of the story. The first are the narrative strategies such as metamorphosis, penetration, metaphor, symbolism, etc. which distinguishes the animated media from another film genres. In a large number of author's animation, it cannot be said that there is a story in the classical sense of the word, but a kind of (non) narrative structure. How the script for such a film was written? This paper should also analyse the importance of sound which in some animations becomes the main storyteller. The second problem is connected to a specific process of making an animated film which differs from making feature movies. During the phases of preproduction and production, the question is when does the author really start applying storytelling? We assume that a certain "structure" is already set in the screenplay or storyboard, but the further process of work can change the previous idea. In straight-ahead animation, the author allows the material to shape its structure. It would be interesting to see what the role of the screenwriter, or dramaturgy in general, is in such an author's work.
