Synopsis

In a variety of ways, zounk! plays on the history of abstract art, harbouring references to Hans Richter’s geometries of motion from the 1920s, Piet Mondrian’s right-angled colour compositions, and Oskar Fischinger’s abstract film music. Billy Roisz likes to produce her works using her own, homemade picture-manipulation apparatuses, trusting the logic, the independent existence of the machines. She generates her visual material with analogue techniques, using video mixer and transducer—she first switches to digital in the video montage. The result is an idiosyncratic mix of brutality and tenderness: image-sound art rising like a bonfire for people with modern nerves. (Stefan Grissemann)

Billy Roisz

Billy Roisz (1967) is a representative of the first “digital generation” of Austrian avant-garde cinema, working since 1999 in the field of video, installations, and audio-visual live performances. In 2011 she was honoured with the top prize for innovative cinema at the annual Festival of Austrian Film, the Diagonale, and in May 2013 the Austrian Film Museum hosted a retrospective of her work. Her ability to translate experimental music into visual imagery is particularly noteworthy, revealing tactics borrowed from minimal and conceptual art. She specialises in feedback video and video/sound interaction by using monitors, cameras, video mixing desks, a self-built video-synth, computer, a bass guitar and sometimes turntables for video and sound generating.
