Saturday at Animafest: Award Ceremony, Long Way North and Karaoke
06/10/2017

The last day of the 27th World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb 2017 is here, hand in hand with the suspense of who will win the honours at 7pm, when the official award ceremony begins at Europa cinema: Grand Prix (best films in Grand Competition – Short Film and Grand Competition – Feature Film), Dušan Vukotić Award (best student film), Golden Zagreb Award (for creativity and innovative artistic accomplishment), Zlatko Grgić Award (best first film made outside an educational institution) and Mr. M (best short and feature film to the audience's choice). Awards for the best Croatian film and best children's film will also be presented, so on Saturday we advise you to check out Croatian Competition 1 and 2 (1pm and 3.30pm, Europa), as well as Children's Film Competition 1 and 2 (3.30pm, Kinoteka and 5.30pm, Kinoteka), preceded by Family Programmes (from 11.30am, Kinoteka). After the screening of Croatian Competition, ASIFA Croatia is organising a hangout at Europa's lobby at 5pm with Croatian producers and authors, and at 8pm HRT's show Animatik celebrates its 100th edition.

Saturday is also the last chance to see European audience's favourite, My Life as a Courgette (11am, Europa), the lavish treat Louise by the Shore by Jean-François Laguionie (11am, Tuškanac), and the anti-war drama In This Corner of the World by Sunao Katabuchi (8pm, Kinoteka). Although traditionally the most visited screening is the one of award-winning films at 8pm at Europa, the festival schedule makers made sure to make entire Friday indeed 'the best of', with the whole World Panorama section at 1pm, 5.30pm and 7pm, followed by a retrospective of Rosto (8pm).

As far as the professional part of the programme is concerned, open to everyone, Michaël Dudok de Wit is having a masterclass about his work on The Red Turtle at KIC (10.30am), Christophe Gérard will discuss the challenges of adapting the graphic novel Epileptic by David B. (12am), and Jelena Popović, on behalf of the prestigious Canadian production company The National Film Board of Canada, which supported great filmmakers like Norman McLaren and recently our own Eva Cvijanović, is having a speech under the title NFB: Utopia and Practices, explaining how the NFB, a public producer and distributer fully funded by taxpayers, achieves creative excellence, equality and diversity of cultural expression.

Saturday is also the day when Animafest, as many times this year, expands out of the city centre and visits the neighbourhoods of Dubrava and Maksimir, and Travno after the official closing on Sunday, 11 June. Animafest in Your Neighbourhood, a programme hosting free screenings to local cultural centres aiming to bring animation as close as possible to citizens of all ages, is screening at 10am at Dubrava Cultural Centre (Avenija Dubrava 51a) and at Cultural and Information Centre Maksimir (Švarcova 16) Long Way North (age 8+) – a stunning animated film about one girl's heroic expedition to the North Pole. The Centre for Culture and Information Maksimir is organising an animation workshop for children after the screening, mentored by Dina Vukelić, for all ages and without limitations as to the number of participants. Cultural Centre Travno (Božidara Magovca 17) is screening Long Way North on Sunday, 10am.

Numerous festival guests, staff and volunteers, everyone who made it come alive in the past six days, will say goodbye to Animafest 2017 with karaoke at Vinyl bar.
