Friday at Animafest: Amazing Avril, Oscar Talks and animators performing and jamming
06/09/2016

On the penultimate day of Animafest Zagreb, Europa cinema opens at 10.00 with an attractive 10-hour performance in the cinema lobby. Pentagon will gather five animators (Ivana Bošnjak, Thomas Johnson, Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi, Ryo Orikasa and Emily Neilson) around the same table to animate together in stop-motion.

Each of them will work with the material of their own choice, with the help of cameras and laptops. After an hour and a half, the table will rotate, frame by frame, for one fifth of the circle, all until the angles are back in place and each animator has animated on every side of the table.

The many lovers of the famous fiction director Charlie Kaufman should not miss his first animated film Anomalisa, co-directed with puppet master Duke Johnson. This story of disappointment won the jury’s Grand Prix at Venice Film Festival, and a best film for adult audience at the Czech Anifilm. At our festival it is scheduled for 20.00 at Europa cinema.

If you missed it on Tuesday, check it out on Friday: Raul Garcia’s Extraordinary Tales, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, each featuring a different visual style. Another curiosity is that, among others, the narrators are director Guillermo del Toro and the famous Sir Christopher Lee. The film is scheduled for 15.30 at Europa cinema.

At 17.30, Tuškanac cinema, there is the third feature that shouldn’t be missed, April and the Imaginary World by Christian Desmares, a chilling thriller set in Paris in the 1950s, winner of Cristal Award for best feature film at Annecy 2015. About the making of this film we will hear from the director on Saturday, 15.30, at the Zagreb Dance Centre.

Animafest kindly invites you to other interesting lectures as well. Friday is mostly dedicated to the Oscars. Normand Roger, the award-winning and prolific Canadian composer who worked on a series of Oscar-nominated and winning films, will be demonstrating different examples of the role of music and sound in animated films, at 11.00, Zagreb Dance Centre.

After him, at 12.00, Olivier Cotte, animation historian, director and graphic novelist will be speaking about the secrets of Oscar-winning animation, on the example of Father and Daughter, the Academy Award-winning masterpiece by Michael Dudok de Wit.

Friday is also the day when Croatian animators will get a chance to express their ideas for a new animated video of the leading global educational platform TED-Ed. Gerta Xhelo, TED-Ed producer, will be speaking at 15.30, Zagreb Dance Centre, about TED-Ed’s curation procedure and animated video production and she will also invite animators, authors and producers present in the audience to express their vision and propose how to turn the following subjects into animated films: How to become an excellent leader or build a dystopian society? How to help a friend overcome addiction? What is the Kardashev scale and how did Vivaldi live? How to present Vermeer’s contribution to art? And, bizarre but interesting, How does the human body decompose after death? TED-Ed will award the lessons to the author of the most fitting proposal.

Animafest also invites you to check out a selection of short films at 17.30, Europa cinema, including Tango (Pedro Giongo, Francisco Russo), a film set in the faraway armlets of the river Aiatak where, after many years of draught, a mysterious potato seeded. Another one is Sunday Lunch (Celine Devaux), a film about one of those lunches we’d all love to avoid, or The Lingerie Show by the festival guest Laura Harrison, a story inspired by actual events from the American addicts circuit.

At 20.00 Europa cinema is screening, among others, the short films A Coat Made Dark by Jack O’Shea, an animal world noir nominated for a jury Grand Prix at Sundance Film Festival, Celebration by Nina Bisyarina and A Long Holiday by Caroline Nugues-Bourchat, this year’s Animafest guest, the film that earned her a Grand Prix for best short film Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles at the Belgian Anima festival.

At 22.30, animators will gather at Vinyl in Bogović Street and – play some music! Join us for the Animators Jam Session and celebrate the second last festival day at Animafest Zagreb. The festival winners will be known on Saturday.
